When it comes to maintaining health there are many do's and don't. Our bodies are amazing and function in spite of the unhealthy things we encounter daily. So let's first have a moment of gratitude for our body, "Thank you for keeping it all together!" Usually this time of year we are most susceptible to viruses and bacteria so here are my
Top Ten Immunity Boosters:
1. Cod Liver Oil (Krill Oil, Olive Oil) - 70% of our immune system is in and around our digestive system (small/large intestines). Cod
liver oil is known for its taste but did you know the presence of oil inhibits unwanted bacteria and viruses from sitting in our systems. Even though most oils will do this, cod liver and krill oil are abundant in Omega 3,6 and 9 and Vitamin D. I know it's hard but start with one teaspoon every other day and see you nails grow, your hair and skin glow and the more you will know.
2. Seasonal Eating - Nature is amazing. As is our bodies, it will provide exactly what we need when we needs. I know blueberries are good year-round but in the fall eat more apples and pears as a means to give your body the nutrients it needs for that time of year.
3. Organic - Eating organic when possible is really more important than we think. Studies show that organic fruits and vegetables can have up to 3 x the nutrients as conventional produce. To cut costs, shop at your local farmer's market and by directly from the farmer.
4. Laugh - Nothing brings us down like stress and nothing lifts us up like a hearty laugh. Many have studied the positive effects of laughter. Even if you are feeling a little down. Smile at a stranger, they'll surprisingly smile back and you will feel great!
5. Hydrate - Water is such an important way to flush our systems of unwanted material. There is even literature on how some believe that proper hydration through water can cure almost anything and lack of hydration is the cause for most illness.
6. Sleep - Seven to eight hours is mandatory for normal functioning. Studies have even compared sleep-deprived drivers to drunk drivers. Anything under six-hours and you are barely making it. Don't believe me? Get 7-8 hours of sleep and let me know how much better your day was.
7. Quiet Time - "SSssshhh." How much time do you spend being quiet in a day? From I-Pods, to television, to telephones we rarely give
our minds a break. This can create subconscious stress and anxiety, so go for a walk, read a book and take time to think about...well thinking.
8. Make meat a treat - Not a meal. The presence of fats from meat has been known to increase cancer risks. Meat provides many nutrients and amino acids that we as humans need. As humans, however we need to cut back a little and make it less of a meal and more of a side.
9. Exercise. What better way to bring down your cholesterol, blood pressure and regulate insulin levels. Did I mention this is an amazing stress reliever? Run, walk or even swim, but do something anything to keep the heart happy.
10. Vegetables - Eat your 5-9 servings of fruit and vegetables daily. Really, it's easy. Have a piece of fruit for breakfast, salad or 2 vegetables for lunch and dinner and one for a snack and your are there. You body will thank you bunches.
