Located in the Miami Circle plaza/shops, AKCrossFit lived up to the expectations. As I pulled up I saw participants running with 10-20lb medicine balls and thought, "What in the world am I getting myself into?" The workout took place in a nice clean warehouse type facility where I was greeted and questioned about my current fitness level. The instructor then proceed to gather everyone around and show us our workout of the day (WOD). Our WOD consisted of pull-ups, burpees, box jumps, 400m runs with a medicine ball and have your finish time recorded. My heart rate went through the roof, my arms were killing me and I worked out all of the soreness from the previous day's leg workout. It was all in all a great total body workout.
WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE CLASS
1. Team Encouragement - As I were running with my med ball thinking, I can't do this, someone runs by and says, "great job" or "you got this" and it motivates you to push harder.
2. Workout Pace - Posting the WOD allowed you to be able to work at your own pace. It was just you and the clock. I enjoyed not feeling like you inhibiting anyone else's workout but at times able to push yourself harder.
3. Modifications Made - For those who couldn't complete the required pull-ups (that would include me), bands were provided. You were allowed to pick your level of box jumps and weight of medicine ball to run with. In other words you could perform at your level with no pressure or shame.
4. The Workout - This was a high level strength endurance workout. I actually had to get my inhaler to breathe once. I loved the fact that I felt like I had to work in different ways to perform the tasks. True to the Cross Fit reputation, there were activities that as a trainer felt the risks outweighed the benefits i.e running with a medicine ball. Running without would have been just as effective, maybe even more. However, this was a great, basic workout that I would recommend to those wanting a great total body workout that will take you to your limits. Enjoy!
