The great Ben Franklin was known for many things. One being, taking an outdoor bath daily in the fresh air, year round. He believed that your risks of becoming ill were increased because of lack of fresh air. I believe he was on to something.
As I look outside and see the gorgeous blue sky, green trees and sun, I can't help but to think of how much I love this weather and the air it brings. Although Atlanta can be a congested and somewhat polluted city those contaminants are diluted by the fresh air that you breathe when outside. Indoor air can often harbor many pollutants that you just don't escape i.e air fresheners, appliance by-products, pet dander etc. So get outside or open a window, circulate your living spaces, clear your head and let it flow!
It's the time of the year that we have all been waiting for, LYH circuit time. This is the time of the year when we move bikes to the pool for Spin & Splash and we circuit. As a track and field athlete we would always look forward to the summer months to get ripped and I expect no less from you! In fact, this is the time of year when your results become most evident. Keep up the good work and if I haven't seen you in a while, this is the time to come back. Circuits get you ripped and feeling great. The last day for bikes are Monday, May 26 and we will ride out!
You have been absolutely phenomenal in your workouts and we can't stop now, summer is right around the corner. Memorial Day's Minute by Minute workout will begin promptly at 9:15am. We will bring in the unofficial start to summer with a bang. Utilizing every minute of the workout to get you one step closer to your fitness goals. The workout will include agility, cardiovascular work, abdominal exercises, upper body and lower body weight resistant training and that exercise... See you there!
Finding a parking space in Piedmont Park can become a bit of a workout in itself this time of year. Please use the designated spots for PPC programming/staff, such as LYH Fitness classes. These areas are sometimes marked with an orange cone. We ask that you leave the other parking spots available for other park goers and visitors.
Spin & Splash Saturday Parking:
Saturday is PPC Green Market. LYH participants can not use those same parking spaces because of loading. LYH participants do have permission to use the spaces allotted for Willy's restaurant until 11am. There is also paid parking in the PPC/Atlanta Botanical Gardens lot as well as street parking.
Have you noticed that we have been running in class? Well, it's time to change it up a bit. Periodization states that we should workout in periods, switching up exercise routines and workouts from time to time in order to continue to gain fitness benefits. This is another form of cross training. Many fitness classes do not have the instructor or resources to "switch it up" but at the Piedmont Park Conservancy, we have the pool, the park and the instructor. Look for your workout to take a bit of a change as we incorporate more agility, conditioning and core work to add the finishing touches to your summer fitness goals.
As summer approaches we give the bikes a break for a body take. LYH Circuits will begin June 2 in the Piedmont Park Conservancy Community Center(1071 Piedmont Ave). This year's focus will include body toning with agility and flexibility. There is free parking in the lot with cones available to those coming to class. Every now and again an article comes out warning us to the risks of a variety of health issues. This week it's uv lights/gel nails. For years we have known the harm and cancer risk that acrylic and even nail polish can cause and this lead us to our love for gel nails which are not as detrimental to our nails (if done properly). Lately studies have shown how the UV light can be harmful and increase risks of skin cancer. Believe it or not, I actually own a gel nail kit which I absolutely love (but hardly use). After all, who doesn't want fab nails? When I do use my kit I often use my Butter polish after for a break. It's considered one of the "3 Free" nail polishes because they don't contain harmful toxins and come in beautiful colors. How many organs can you name? There is one major organ that we most often forget, our skin. Welcoming warmer weather should also include transitioning to a new beauty regiment. We have all heard the saying, less is more. This proves especially true during this time of year. During the spring and summer months allow your skin to breathe and detox by avoiding products with lists of ingredients that you can't pronounce. Most cosmetics sold in the U.S are known to contain chemicals that have adverse reactions to our health, including cancer. However, there are cosmetic companies that offer safe alternatives. Look for my favorites on loveyouhealthy.com. You might just have a few in your home already.
Today marks the midpoint between Spring and Summer. In other words, warmer days are ahead. I'm excited about this upcoming summer. Spin & Splash was a great hit last year and I am looking forward to making it better. You are all doing an amazing job of getting in shape and as you know when I make a goal, we all make a goal. We have three weeks to hit it hard. Drink your water, cut back on your processed foods, take your lunch, begin your soda-free summer today. All of these are small things that you can begin to do now in order to get you on that next step towards being swimsuit ready in 2014. Looking forward to seeing you in class. - Saidah
