Every now and again, I find a food or beverage that I absolutely love. More than the nutrient power punch that the food usually contains, is the way it makes me immediately feel, I also love the taste and look. It also has to be a well-rounded, well-packaged food for your well-being. This month, I am in love with the Organic Raw Kombucha beverage. Bottled in glass, Kombucha, provides enzymes and probiotics which instantly makes me feel great the moment I drink it. It is a raw, live food which I love, loaded with electrolytes. Fermentation provide extra detoxifying agents. Each drink also, has a cool little saying contributed by those who drink it. "Ferment in your own greatness." by Lisa Paris
Swing by your nearest health food store or Whole Foods and try one today. Blueberry is a great place to start.
As I began training a client this week, my first question was, "What did you have for breakfast?" My client replied with a few basic items and...a diet soda. It wasn't even 10am! My next question, "How many do you drink in a day?" I didn't receive a straight anwser, but it was anywhere between 6-12 (12 oz.)cans daily. My gripe is not just with soda, even though soda is horrible for your health. I am a big believer in having EVERYTHING in moderation. When we talk about foods it is important that we have a balanced diet. This means incorporating different foods in our diet. To have an excess of soda, juice or alcohol means that we are missing out on something else. This even rings true when it comes to fruit and vegetables. Instead of eating kale and tomatoes every week, it is important to incorporate different types of produce as they contain different nutrients that aid to the health of your body. When you drink over 12 oz. of coffee every day, then chances are you missing out on the water that you should be drinking first thing in the morning. Instead of replenishing yourself from your 6-8 hours of fasting (while sleeping) you in contrast become even more dehydrated. Have a cookie, coffee or cola every now and then, but remember...everything in moderation.
The solution for my client: After drinking one can, fill it with water, decreasing cola consumption, and increasing water intake.
We have about two more weeks before...LYH-Spinergy is launched. If you have attended class, you have probably noticed that we have been a little light on the volume and/or weight resistance. Count on this to continue along with a change in the type of exercises that we are doing. Last week, we did sprints on the Active Oval and this week we will take a visit to the Piedmont Park Pool (Aquatic Center) for Spin and Splash.
This workout is not just about cross-training, and doing something new, but about muscle and joint recovery. I want your muscles to take a break, and get a little physical therapy. Especially before the next cycle of fitness begins. Please feel free to stop by everyone is welcome, even if you don't want to get your hair wet. We will be extra careful and have a lot of fun. - Saidah
I confiscated two cupcakes from my clients this week. They were absolutely beautiful. One had a little cute candy heart on top (the red velvet one), one had and oreo cookie on top(double chocolate) and they chose to keep the caramel one.
They reminded me of two things:
1. Master Chef, because they always say, “You eat first with your eyes”.
2. The teenage girl diet commercial. The man takes three teenage girls around with him all day. The girls get grossed out by the look of what the guy eats, (hamburgers, ice cream sundaes etc.), so he puts it down.
Instead of relying on will power to make the right diet choices, we should change the way we see our food. When I look at food, I think of all the things that made up that food. The sugars, fats, dyes, etc. and how it will affect my well-being. The more artificial ingredients, the more I am completely turned-off from it.
For example, let’s take a peach milk shake. Sounds yummy huh? When I see a peach shake, I think first, peaches are always at the top of the dirty dozen list(for pesticides). I don’t know what the whip cream is made of but it doesn’t taste like ‘whipped cream , cherries don’t come in hot pink and milk and sugar do not taste like this. What does sound yummy to me is a scoop of real vanilla ice cream with fresh cut up peaches from the local market.
I want to put you through a food challenge. Take a food that isn’t that high in nutritional value, but you do eat it
on occasion. Buy it, close your eyes and eat it slowly, paying close attention to the taste, texture, and how the food makes you feel.
Take a longer look at the foods we eat and get beyond the beauty.
