Located on West Paces, cycling at FLYWHEEL was a lot of fun. I checked in (10:30am/Sunday)and was given clip shoes for my ride and directions to use a locker. I grabbed a towel and was met at the door by maintenance personnel who helped me with my seat position and height. The studio was dark, the music was blaring, the spotlight and mic on the instructor took me back to club nights, except it was Sunday morning.
All bikes have a torque(resistance) and rpm digital display so you were constantly aware of your effort. The instructor also kept the workout moving by giving you different torque levels and rpms to aim for during the class. The entire ride consisted of either sitting or standing with a variation of torque and rpms. We lifted 2-4lb mini-bars and performed upper body exercises which created a great deal of burn but I'm sure not much else with only 2-4 minutes of the one song. I would have loved to have lifted the bars more and maybe add more variation with the ride. The music was a great mix of hip-hop, r&b etc. but after 15 minutes it dawned on me why the earplugs were at the check-in. I'll blame that one on my 40 year old ears. I'm sure like most of the other riders, my 20 -30yr old ears would have been fine. I often small talk with the participants to get a feel of the culture and none of that was happening here. I got stuck in my clipped shoes(hilarious right), the girl next to me seemed annoyed that I had to ask for how to escape.
WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE CLASS
1. The Instructor - She rode the entire time which both inspired and motivated me, she was great. Not only did she killed the ride but served as real-life model of what to shoot for, she was in amazing shape!
2. No Pressure - I didn't feel pressure to overwork. I signed up (optional) to have my power levels displayed and compared with other participants. I couldn't for the life of me power my way fast enough to move up the list and it was just fine.
3. The Workout - The techniques used to maintain your heart rate for the duration of this class made it a great cardiovascular workout. For those looking to shed a few extra pounds and get a major sweat going or to complement your strength training regiment, this class is for you.
4. The Apparel - I feel in love with the apparel. I took a tank top to the register RE-LENT-LESS RIDE. It was great, until she told me with tax it was $50....WHAT? Try a ride and check out that tank top (it's still there). :-)
