There are plenty of reasons to establish a well-rounded workout. Adding variety to your personal fitness regiment is key to getting optimal results both inside and out. During the summer we move the indoor cycling bikes to the pool and I absolutely love the transition that you and your body have to undergo in the summer. Which is why I often chose to make a high impact when training all of you. ;-)
Last week we had a blast playing kickball and this week our relay races on the stairs were a lot of fun. All of these workouts are two-fold and deliberately incorporated to increase your level of impact this time of year. True the bikes are nice but recent studies have shown that bones should be jarred, for their own good. Past experiments have definitively established that subjecting bones to abrupt stress prompts them to add mass or at least reduces their loss of mass as people age. In other words if you want to reduce joint pain, swimming, biking and ellipticals will give you temporary relief but to walking/jogging is the way to establish positive structural changes for the long term. This is why although bikes, treadmills and ellipticals are a great way to reduce impact, it is the actual impact that you need to build stronger, better bones.
In other words change it up a little, get off those bikes, get out of the pool, and save the treadmill for another season. Use high-impact workouts to compliment your fitness regiment. LYH Circuits meet Monday/Wednesday 6-7pm!
